  1. I Hate Paypal

    March 11, 2007 by Blondette

    *sigh*
(*update at the bottom of post!)

Tonight, I’m trying to pay for a premium membership to SEOmoz and I’m giving up because I’m running into the same roadblocks with Paypal that I always hit.

When I login to my Paypal acccount it tells me to add a card. So, I enter my debit card info and it tells me that card is already active on the account. AWESOME! too bad when I login to Paypal it doesn’t show up or let me use it! So, you’re asking, “why not use another card Katie?” Because I’m stubborn and cheap and my debit card is the only card I use–yes, I have another “credit” card but it is strictly for emergencies and large purchases and if off limits to Paypal–even for SEOmoz :( I’ve done the debt thing and it sucked.

I tried the option where you don’t have to login to a Paypal account. I entered my info and crossed my fingers. It told me I couldn’t use the card because it was already attached to a Paypal account and I should sign in to use it. AWESOME AGAIN. Too bad when I sign in IT DOESN’T LET ME USE THE CARD IT SAYS IS ON MY ACCOUNT.

This same kind of bs has happened the last 3 times I’ve tried to use Paypal. I’m frustrated.

SEOmoz, I LOVE you and I really want to sign up for the premium membership, but I cannot work with Paypal. They hate me and now I hate them. (takes a lot to get me to hate someone or something!) SEOmoz, I implore you to add another option for payment! in fact, I will probably being emailing you to see if we can work something out.

I must now look at random kitten pictures.

*UPDATE* I did end up emailing the SEOmoz team. Unfortunately, Paypal is the only option. Thanks to Rand Fishkin and Matthew Inman for their prompt replies! Even though they couldn’t give me good news, I do truly appreciate the fact that they answered my email.

  2. How Do You Get a Job in SEO?

    November 4, 2006 by Blondette

    Backstory

A little over a year ago, I was beginning to get a clue about what it was I wanted to do with my life. I’ve always been sort of bookish (yet tremendous ;) ) and nerdy. I like too many things, but love too few. My lack of clear passion lead me to stacks of library books about personality, resume writing, and career planning.

The short list of Katie Career Stats September 2005:

    • I’d been out of college for over a year.
    • I did not really know html.
    • I knew how to write.
    • I had no clue what “SEO” meant.
    • I lived with my parents.
    • I was addicted to the internet.

This is the Part about SEO

I beat them down. Well, not really. I was persistent and almost begged–but it was professionalish begging. When I say “them” I am referring to my present employer. I had finally gotten a clue and decided to try to be a copywriter. That’s how I found the ad. The agency was looking for a copywriter, but I wasn’t qualifed–I continued my investigation of the company website and found a page for internship opportunities. Wow-JACKPOT. I could intern. I was qualifed. I’d do it for free because even working for free was moving forward.

    Enter…SEO.

In September 2005, I had no idea that SEO was Search Engine Optimization. From there, I learned that SEO had something to do with getting a site to rank in the search engine results. From there, I read, read, read, and read some more–all on the internet.

That passion I couldn’t find before? It was there on SearchEngineWatch, Cre8asite Forums, High Ranking, SEOmoz, John Battelle’s Searchblog and… about 200 other places. Finally, a way to blend my love of analysis, writing, and the interweb!

    Where I Am Now

The short list of Katie Career Stats November 2006:

    • I’d been out of college for over two years.
    • I really know html.
    • I know how to write.
    • I love SEO.
    • I live alone (with my cat.)
    • I am addicted to the internet.

The thing about SEO is it takes a major time investment. Not just implementing, but researching, staying involved and active. I could liken it to my reverse fat project. You can’t get lazy and expect good SEO just like you can’t be lazy and expect to keep losing weight. Link farms like diet pills = short term results and possible long term damage.

I’m trying to climb back on that treadmill of SEO. My time has been needed elsewhere, but I’m trying to make that commitment to get back to what I love. (I’m also trying to learn php.)

    Answer the Question!

But Katie, that’s not an answer!
So, how do you get a job in SEO? You take a step forward and you keep taking steps. That’s it.

  3. Allergies

    August 24, 2006 by Blondette

My allergies are terrible. Also, please be on the lookout for an extra special post.

Can’t sleep. Might as well follow-up on something I wrote a but earlier. Remember the Texas art teacher who posted nude images of herself on Flickr? Well, she is no longer employed but she is going back to school. Actually, I’ve been thinking about going back to school too. Maybe we can take some classes together…She certainly had a lot of friends on MySpace.

In other news, it looks like one of our sites has dropped out of the SERPs on two of the major engines for now…I am crossing my fingers that when we reappear it’s at a higher ranking.

  4. Can it Be?

    June 15, 2006 by Blondette

I saw a this on cnn.com and it made me go “eh?”

Bill Gates is the same age as my mom. Think he’d donate a little to her debt repayment efforts? No? eh, she uses Ask anyway…
