This weekend I’ve spent a few hours trolling a new (to me) application on Facebook. Flixster is an application that matches your self ranked movie preferences against those of your friends. Thus far, I have learned that I am not movie compatible with anyone. Apparently, I hate everything others love; and vice versa. Sorry yo, I do NOT like Sin City, ET (maybe I need to see it again), anything Ben Stiller (my oh my oh my oh my, he makes me cringe.)
I had Blockbuster Total Access for 6 months (maybe longer) and it was a good way to see movies I’d not otherwise see–in theory. I do not have cable, so the idea was that I’d just watch dvds to fill the need to view. It worked to a degree, but I still felt like I was spending too much money for it. I’m too moody to predict when I’ll want to watch something. The Departed sat for a month or longer unwatched.
I endeavor to watch more movies; either at home on DVD or at the theater. I don’t go to movies enough. I go out to bars too much. I should just watch movies instead. Especially now that I’m going to be so busy at work. Much better and more satisfying.
Here are some of my favorite movies and some upcoming movies I’d like to see.
Favorites:
- Circle of Friends: I used to watch this everyday after school thanks to HBO. I miss it. I had a crush on Chris O’Donnell and it’s based on a book by one of my favorite authors, Maeve Binchy. I can still quote it–in fact, I have moments weekly where I relate this movie back to my life.
- Contact: One of the best movies. It is multi-layered and that’s part of what I love about it. It brings up deeper issues of faith and love and belief systems, but it also has great plot and storyline. For Carl. I think he’d approve.
- The Family Stone: A recent addition. I like drama and comedy mixes–especially when Christmas and family is involved.
- Meet Me in St. Louis: Everyone has movies that they’ve memorized; this is one of mine. I will be your tootsie-wootsie if you will meet me in St. Louie Louie, meet me at the fair…la la la la la lalaaaa. Not to mention we got one of the greatest Christmas songs ever out of it: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. I will always love this one and keep it in a cigar box my papa gave me, all wrapped in silver paper.
- Love Actually: If you know me and you’ve seen this movie, then it should be a no-brainer for you that this is one of my alltime favorites. Love in its many forms
- Miracle on 34th Street: Sigh. Christmas classic. Real whiskers. Again with the believing and faith having.
- White Christmas: It’s a classic!
- A Christmas Story: I can watch the Christmas replay all day. It’s a warm and fuzzy for me.
- Legally Blonde: oh Elle! I love it.
- A Christmas Carol: Classic.
- Sense and Sensibility: So well made; and Jane Austen.
- Pride and Prejudice: BBC/A&E and new Kiera Knightly version. I love the story.
- Jane Austen Books that have been movie-ized: yeah, there’s enough that I should just say all of them. I love them.
- The Wedding Date: one of those movies I can put in and zone in and out. Or just go to sleep. Familiar and comfortable.
- Harry Potter Movies: I like the books and the movies do a good job with them. They make me happy. They make me want to do magic. Magic is real.

I saw “Gone Baby, Gone.” It was good. Not “Man On Fire” good, but entertaining enough and contemplative.
It leaves you asking, “What would I do?” I still don’t know the answer to that.
