It’s a Whore Filled Web

August 11, 2006 by Blondette

So about a month ago, I started a post about the evolution of the word “whore” on the Internet. This all came about in one of those moments of me just randomly talking and once again, probably broaching that little line of decency and decorum in the workplace (*sigh* yes, I was talking about Internet whoring at work–somewhat tame compared to yesterday’s blatant sexual innuendo involving common items found on a desk.)

I actually uttered the following, “we’re open source whores.” Not only am I a link whore, a post whore, a download whore, or an internet whore; I’m an open source whore. Look at me, I’m so the life of the Interweb! (omgwtfweb2.0bbq!!!!11)

But really, it’s so true it almost hurts.

So, how do you know you’re using the term whore correctly in regards to the internet? If it is preceded by any of the following:

  • *. Internet–so “duh” it doesn’t get a number
  • 1. Blog–If you run or contribute to more than 2 blogs (guilty)
  • 2. Google–are you a Google Whore? do you use all the latest and greatest from our friends at the Googleplex?
  • 3. RSS–you feed whore you!
  • 4. Wikipedia–you’re a special one if you are a wikipedia whore…
  • 5. Bloglines–and other aggregation sites–aggregation is an Internet whor
    e’s best friend
  • 6. bittorrent–BT…downloading goodness
  • 7. Web 2.0–crave the wave!
  • 8. Tag–do you find yourself wishing you could simply “tag” everything in life? Are you a social bookmarking addict? (del.icio.us whore here)
  • 9. Email
  • 10. IM–soooo many instant messages!

I’ll leave it at ten for now, as you’ve probably already gotten the point. Feel free to add your own via comments–hey, no spam and keep it clean people!
